About Our Community & School

Riverton USD 404 Schools are located in the community of Riverton, which is a traditional unincorporated community located near the banks of Spring River and the intersection of U.S. 400 and U.S. 66 in Cherokee County, Kansas.

While unincorporated and with no city government, the community of Riverton supports businesses related to building supply, grocery, welding, car washing, pool supply, banking and financial services, and utilities (Empire District Electric Company).  Most local residents, however, commute to work everyday in cities such as Baxter Springs, Galena, Columbus, and Joplin, Missouri.  These cities offer primarily manufacturing, technology, chemical, construction, retail, and service related employment opportunities.  Opportunities for higher education are not far from home with students having access to four major universities, four small colleges, and many community colleges all within three hours driving time.

The fact that the school district does not encompass an incorporated city and that grades K-12 are located on the same campus make this district somewhat unique in the State of Kansas.  The district currently serves 796 students in grades PK-12 with approximately 44% being considered economically disadvantaged.  Local residents and staff are very proud of their school system and ensure that the facilities are well-maintained as they serve not only to educate the students but also as a hub for many local activities.

We are very proud of our continued success on the Kansas State Assessments with each building within the district having scored at or above the “Standard of Excellence” on one or more of the reading, math and/or science assessments in recent years.  Although not mandated under NCLB, K-12 Science Assessment scores have been at or above the state average and well above the state required AYP target for each of the last four years.  K-12 Social Studies scores exceeded the state average in 2008, which was the last time the social studies assessment was taken in Kansas.  In addition to this continued achievement on the Kansas Assessments, Riverton Schools continue to enjoy success on other measures of quality with an overall attendance rate of 95.8% and a graduation rate of 90.3% for the most recent five year period.

Beyond testing and assessment, Riverton USD 404 continues to provide outstanding extra-curricular and co-curricular opportunities for student achievement as evidenced by recent accomplishments in Agricultural Education (KS Top FFA Chapter 2008, 2009), MSSU Math League, CNC League and state music festivals and athletics (2009 and 2010 - State Champs in softball, 2009 -CNC champs in football with multiple play-off appearances).
